Stillbirth and neonatal deaths

The number of babies in the UK who are stillborn or who die shortly after birth in the UK remains stubbornly high.

Specialist birth injury and pregnancy lawyers at Leigh Day are highly experienced in handling claims on behalf of clients who have suffered the devastating loss of their baby, either during a pregnancy, or soon after delivery.  Parents are usually in deep shock when this happens, but almost always have questions about what went wrong.  However, it is often only some months after this traumatic event that they have the strength to contact solicitors.

UK charity SANDS offers support to parents whose baby dies during pregnancy, or soon after delivery, and campaigns to improve the standard of care and services offered to bereaved families.  It also promotes research into practices that could help reduce the number of baby deaths each year.
If something has gone wrong when it should not have our medical negligence lawyers can help bereaved parents investigate what happened. We can help with complaints, internal inquiries and attend inquests with clients into unexplained deaths of babies.  Sometimes, this is the first time that a parent will become aware that mistakes were made during the pregnancy and delivery, which should have been avoided.

We help clients to challenge hospital trusts as they try and to discover the real reasons behind the death of their children, and will also bring claims for compensation arising from negligent treatment, although this is rarely the motivating factor for clients who simply want others to avoid the terrible loss that they have suffered, and find out why their baby died.
