A match between two of the most decorated European football clubs, the UEFA Champions League final in 2022 was set to be the pinnacle of the football calendar.

The feeling of optimism and excitement amongst football fans when arriving at the match would starkly contrast the experiences they endured on the night. What was supposed to be a monumental occasion descended into utter chaos. Loyal fans need justice.

On 28 May 2022 the Champions League final between Real Madrid and Liverpool took place at Stade de France in Paris. But the showpiece match between the two great clubs was disfigured by chaotic organisation, in which Liverpool supporters suffered a near disaster and riot police teargassed spectators while failing to protect people from violent attacks by local thugs

Compensation

In joining the claim, you will also join others seeking compensation for physical and psychological harm caused as a result of events at the Stade de France. Whilst compensation cannot fix what has happened, it is important that individual experiences, losses, suffering and injuries are recognised by those responsible and that big organisations, like UEFA, are significantly penalised financially for their failures.

Our clients were ordinary football fans attending Europe’s most high-profile football match. They had paid hundreds of pounds for tickets, accommodation and transport. They deserved safety, but have reported that they were assaulted, crushed, tear gassed and left with physical and psychological injuries.

Accountability

Football has long been regarded as a sport which unifies and brings people together and we have witnessed first hand what fan unity has achieved already.

It was the collective action of fans, sharing pictures, video footage and first-hand accounts in the immediate aftermath of events at the Stade de France that facilitated the initial inquiry held by the French senate. This concluded that fans were not at fault.

It was the collective actions of fans, helping and supporting others caught up in chaos, which minimised injuries and preserved life.

It will be the collective actions of fans which will hold those responsible to account.

Football supporters across Europe deserve a commitment from those responsible to be better in the future. By joining this group claim, you are adding your weight to the demands of hundreds of others already seeking answers and assurances of safety in the future.

The aim of this action is to hold those responsible to account and to prevent football supporters from being treated with such contempt in the future.

Lessons for the future

What occurred on that night was really shocking and just simply should not have happened. The evidence that comes out during legal action may help to highlight lessons that can be learned for the future. This will benefit supporters of clubs everywhere.

What our clients say

I was funnelled into a small space for a ticket check…I felt very frightened and it was at this stage when I started to suffer the effects of the tear gas. I felt what I could only describe as helplessness

What our clients say

I was pepper sprayed and assaulted and I feared for my health and life when being crushed at the gates

What our clients say

In addition to the tear gas we were being crushed as we approached the pinch point of the one open turnstile. In front of me was a girl in her 20s. She was distressed. Myself and other fans talked to her to keep her calm, it would be okay I said whilst at the same time wondering if it actually would be

Stade de France FAQs

Leigh Day is investigating a civil claim against UEFA on behalf of those meeting the eligibility criteria.

No. Provided you meet the eligibility criteria we may be able to help.

Eligibility criteria

  • You held a ticket purchased directly from UEFA, Liverpool F.C or Real Madrid C.F
  • You live in England and Wales
  • You sustained physical and/or psychological injury (‘your injuries’)
  • Your injuries were sustained in or immediately around the Stade de France
  • Your injuries continued upon your return home.

Yes. We believe that the English Court will only be able to hear cases for supporters based in England and Wales.

We support the calls for an independent and transparent investigation to ensure that the shocking events of the day are not repeated. Your self-reports have made a valuable contribution towards holding those responsible to account. However, Leigh Day is looking to secure compensation for those individuals who were victims through a civil claim. If you want to register your interest in a potential civil claim you will need to register your interest here.

We strongly believe that the strength of this claim is in the unity of fans acting together to achieve a common goal. We are therefore proposing the claim is brought as a group claim (sometimes referred to as a class action). This is the most cost-effective way of bringing a group claim.

By joining a group claim you do not lose your voice. Your individual experiences are important to us and will be recognised in any potential claim, but we are only proposing to bring the claim as a group action.

As part of the claim process, we will gather information from each of you about how you have been personally affected. Any potential claim is likely to be subject to French law and at this early stage, we are seeking to recover compensation for the physical and psychological injuries suffered by those attending the match together with any recoverable financial losses.

Commencing a claim in court should always be a last resort. However, the need to take this step is sadly becoming more common. If it is necessary to commence a claim in court, in the interest of fairness and justice, we are proposing that any potential claim should be heard in a court in England.

No.

If the claim is successful (we win) and you are awarded compensation Leigh Day will seek to recover their costs and expenses in bringing the claim on your behalf from the defendant(s). There will not be any deduction from your compensation for our legal fees.

No.

If the claim is unsuccessful (we lose), you will not have to pay our fees or any expenses. The incurred expenses will be covered by the After the Event insurance.

You are in principle personally responsible for fees of third parties (for example, medical experts or treating experts in connection with your injuries) and the defendant’s costs if you are unsuccessful. We are therefore recommending taking out a group insurance policy on behalf of all clients to cover any personal risk in connection with this claim. We will work with you to identify a suitable policy of cover which offers value and protection whilst, most importantly, giving you peace of mind that you are protected.

Yes, if you were with a minor (someone who is under 18) who meets the eligibility criteria and for whom you have legal responsibility (for example, you are their parent or guardian), then you can join the claim on their behalf by completing the sign-up form on our website. You will then become the litigation friend for your child, subject to our checks. You will need to complete a separate sign-up form for each minor.

Please complete the form by entering their details (except where stated otherwise).

You can only sign up to the claim on behalf of someone under 18 if you are legally responsible for them (for example, you are their parent or guardian). If you are unsure or have any questions about this, please call us so that we can assist.

Yes, you can sign up for more than one child. You will need to complete a separate sign-up form for each child.

Yes.

We may already have some brief details about your child from when you joined the claim, however, in order to bring a claim on their behalf we need you to formally sign up to the claim on their behalf. You can only do this if you have their permission.

If you were with a child who was affected and you are not legally responsible for them, then their parent will need to register their child’s interest on their behalf.

If you were with another adult and they would like to join the claim then they will need to do so themselves on our website.

However, if you were with someone who is a protected party i.e., lacks the mental capacity to make their own decisions, you may become their litigation friend if agreed with their legal carer. If this is the case, please call us on 0151 305 7297 so that we can discuss your individual circumstances in further detail.

No, if you are under 18 you will need to ask your parent or guardian to join the claim on your behalf. If you were 17 at the time of the match but have since turned 18 you can join the claim on your own behalf.

When someone is a protected party or a minor (under the age of 18), they cannot bring a claim themselves. In these circumstances, a litigation friend helps them do this. A litigation friend is usually a parent or a legal guardian. It needs to be someone who can make fair decisions in the best interests of the child or protected party. A litigation friend must not make decisions about the claim which are in their own interests.

A protected party is an adult who is unable to manage their own affairs. This might be because they lack the mental capacity to make decisions for themselves, or are seriously injured, so are unable to make decisions for themselves. Please call us if you would like to sign up on behalf of a protected party.

Once you have joined the claim by agreeing to our funding documents on behalf of your child, we will need to confirm that you have legal responsibility for them.

We will email you to request proof that you have legal responsibility of this person. This is usually in the form of a birth certificate. You will also need to send us your proof of address and proof of identity documents and fill in a court form called a ‘Certificate of Suitability to be a litigation friend’ and return it to us by email at sdfclaim@leighday.co.uk. This form confirms that you can act on the minor’s behalf.

We will email you about this separately. If you have any questions about filling out the form, please give us a call on 0151 305 7297.

Having a litigation friend usually does not affect the claim. The main difference is that the Court will have to approve any compensation or settlement that the litigation friend agrees to on behalf of the minor/protected party that they are representing.

We can only accept tickets purchased through LFC, UEFA or the French Football Federation (“FFF”).

You need to provide us with either a booking confirmation, invoice or screenshot of your ticket from the UEFA app which clearly shows your full name, ticket number (or supporter ID) and ticket price.

As a first step it would be helpful if you could send a picture of your hard copy ticket to us by email at sdfclaim@leighday.co.uk.

You will then need to contact whoever you purchased your ticket from initially to request a further copy of the booking confirmation or invoice.

Yes, if someone else purchased your ticket for you then you can still join the group claim. If someone purchased the ticket for you from LFC we will need to see the ticket confirmation email from them. This email confirmation will include your name if the ticket was allocated to you as the supporter attending. We suggest you ask them to forward the email to you for you to send on to us.

If they purchased the ticket from UEFA / FFF we suggest you ask whoever purchased the ticket for you to send the invoice / emails / screenshots that they have to you. Once you have forwarded these on to us, we will review these and advise you if we require any further information.

Please try and contact whoever you purchased your ticket from initially to request a further copy.

If you purchased your ticket from LFC please check your LFC account and provide us with a screenshot of your account history showing the ticket purchased for the match. If you are unable to do this, please contact us so that we can discuss your individual circumstances further to see how we can help.

If you are unsure if you are able to join the claim, we suggest that you give us a call on 0151 305 7297 and a member of the team will be happy to listen to your situation and explain if we can assist. We have been able to help people who previously thought they could not join the claim so it is important to speak with us so that we can help where we can.

What our clients say

Excellent, expert, highly professional service in a group action. Very communicative and pro-active. Great work! And from one who has used plenty of lawyers, but never in a class action, I was mightily impressed.
