Law firm Leigh Day have launched a collective legal action against Avara Foods Limited and Cargill Plc over allegations that they are responsible for the pollution in the River Wye region.

A claim is being made against Avara Foods and Cargill, one of the UK's largest food producers, for allegedly polluting the River Wye, and nearby land through large-scale chicken farming.

Scientists at Lancaster University found that 70% of all phosphate in the River Wye catchment comes from agriculture, and although not all of that is related to poultry farming, Avara processes 4.5 million chickens every week.

Avara has promised a new plan for manure management, but Leigh Day argues that Avara should clean up the existing damage and pay compensation to the people and businesses affected.
