Leigh Day launches Regulatory & Disciplinary team

Leigh Day is today launching a specialist legal team to advise and act for professionals and their practices on regulatory and disciplinary matters, including investigations and prosecutions.

Posted on 11 September 2018

For more than four years, Leigh Day has responded to the Solicitors Regulation Authority’s (SRA) investigation and prosecution of the firm and some of its lawyers, in connection with the Al-Sweady Inquiry.

Following a six week hearing in 2017, believed to be the longest in the history of the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal, all the charges brought were dismissed. The outcome of an appeal by the SRA against some of those findings is currently pending.

The Regulatory & Disciplinary team, made up of Frances Swaine, Leigh Day’s Managing Partner, and Associate Solicitors, Gideon Habel and Emma Walker, acted as the firm's in-house legal team throughout that investigation and the subsequent proceedings.

Frances Swaine said today, “The team has been at the forefront of the defence of the SRA’s investigation and prosecution and has gained a unique insight into regulatory and disciplinary law and proceedings.

“Our aim is to advise professionals on maintaining a compliant practice, assist them with communicating with their regulator and support them through an investigation, prosecution or appeal.  We know what it’s like to be under regulatory scrutiny and the difficulties it creates for practices and practitioners, both professionally and personally, and we want to help fellow professionals and their practices in what are challenging times.”
