Leigh Day settles vitamin supplement case
Woman became ill after taking vitamin and mineral supplement
Posted on 21 May 2012
The top-ranked product liability team at Leigh Day has recently settled a claim on behalf of an individual who became seriously ill after taking a vitamin and mineral supplement known as Formula F.
Mrs GB was a patient of Dr Rajendra Sharma at the exclusive Diagnostic Clinic near Harley Street in London.
Dr Sharma sold Formula F to Mrs GB on the basis that it would put her back on to the road to recovery in that it would help build up her immune system.
Shortly after taking the product, Mrs GB became seriously unwell. She was admitted to hospital as an emergency patient with life threatening symptoms such as renal and liver failure due to Vitamin D toxicity.
Tests carried out on the tablets revealed that they may have contained as much as 568 times the safe level of Vitamin D potentially due to problems at the manufacturing stage. The product labelling stated that the tablets contained safe levels of Vitamin D.
Liability was admitted and the claim of Mrs GB has now been resolved.
Thomas Jervis of the product liability department, said:
“This case raises worrying concerns about the regulation of the world of alternative healthcare products. Unless the regulators give more focus to this subject, consumers will continue to be put at risk. The team at Leigh Day is pleased to have secured this result in this complex case”
