Female cyclist who broke her back after collision awarded compensation
A female cyclist from Sussex has successfully recovered compensation following a road traffic collision as she was cycling to work, which left her with a broken back.

British Cycling member, Claire Leonard from Sussex, was cycling to her work as a School Business Manager when a driver turned right across her path, throwing her from her bicycle, fracturing her vertebrae and causing ligament damage to her knee.
Claire, a keen cyclist and a member of her local cycling club, enjoyed competing in national road racing events, however, following the accident she struggled to get back on her bike both physically and psychologically.
The driver’s insurer admitted liability for the collision and interim payments were obtained for Claire’s rehabilitation, which included the assistance of a psychologist to cope with her travel anxiety and regain her confidence on her bike.
Claire received compensation for her injuries, the damage to her bicycle and to fund her ongoing rehabilitation needs. She has now returned to cycling and is continuing her rehabilitation.
Following settlement, Claire said:
“This accident has totally changed my life, both the physical and psychological consequences I continue to live with.
“I will always be grateful to the British Cycling Federation and the way they supported my husband during the initial stages of this process, without this membership I would not have received access to legal representation and settlement for me to continue my rehabilitation”.
Claire was represented by Bethany Sanders, Associate Solicitor, in Leigh Day’s personal injury department, assisted by Katherine Wilkinson, Assistant Solicitor. Her claim was supported and funded by British Cycling.
