More Hotpoint dishwasher models recalled due to fire hazard

The consumer safety body Which? has released another warning about potentially dangerous appliances as Hotpoint issues a further safety notice about two more models of its dishwashers.

This follows a recall announced by Hotpoint in April 2013 relating to its FDW2&6 range.  Which? levied criticism at the company for a delay in initiating this recall given that it raised its own concerns in April 2012 after the consumer group identified a disproportionate amount of fires linked to Hotpoint dishwashers.

Specialist consumer safety lawyer and Leigh Day partner Jill Paterson is concerned that many consumers who have purchased the affected products may not be aware that they are giving house space to potentially lethal appliances.

Jill currently represents multiple families who have suffered fatalities, personal injuries, property destruction and other losses arising out of house fires caused by a whole range of home appliances manufactured by such companies as Beko, Bosch and Hotpoint.

Leigh Day worked with affected families to establish the campaign group “Expect its safe”, which calls for more stringent regulation of manufacturers of household appliances. 

The Electricity Safety Council estimates that in 2011/12 dishwashers were the cause of 475 fires and 68 injuries.

Hotpoint dishwashers

The dishwashers identified by Hotpoint as posing a potential fire risk were manufacture red between January 1999 and September 2003 and contain a faulty electrical component which can overheat.

The affected model numbers are: DWF30, DWF31, DWF32, DWF33, DWF34, DWF35, DWM37, and DC26.
