Recall of Belkin Apple Watch charger following a fire risk to customers

Belkin has announced a voluntary recall of its “BoostCharge Pro Fast Wireless Charger for Apple Watch + Power Bank 10K, BPD005.”

Posted on 12 November 2024

The product contains a lithium cell which has been found to pose a fire hazard due to overheating. As such, the charger does not meet the requirements of the General Product Safety Regulations 2005.

Belkin have advised all customers to immediately stop using the product and contact them for further instructions. Due to the lithium cell, the product is unable to be disposed of in household waste. Belkin are encouraging customers to fill out their online form and receive safe disposal advice.

Belkin have stated that no injuries have been reported as a result of this issue. They have also advised that a full refund will be issued to all customers.

Product safety solicitor, Philippa Wheeler, comments on the recall:

“Whilst it is good to hear that there have been no reported injuries from this product, recalls announced after the product has been on the market are always concerning as there are difficulties in publicising the information to all consumers affected.

“Products containing a lithium battery, such as this charger, should be rigorously tested for fire risk prior to sale on the market. This recall highlights that the dangers associated with lithium batteries extend far beyond larger, and more well known, products such as e-bikes.”
