He died in Harrow, London, at the age of 73 on 29 November 2022 from mesothelioma. An inquest was opened, which confirmed that he died from an industrial disease

Before his death, Peter told his family that he had been exposed to asbestos during his work as a carpet fitter.

Peter’s ex-wife, Rita Craig, also remembers that as part of his work, Peter cut doors which may have contained asbestos panels.

The carpet fitting companies that Peter worked for include the following:·

  • Maples Carpet Factory, Camden: Early 1960s,
  • Premier Carpet Panners Ltd:1965 to 1966
  • Charles Page (Furnishers) Ltd; 1965 to 1966
  • H & A Carpet Planners: 1967 to 1968
  • Wordsworth Carpet Planners 1967 to 1969
  • A O Carpet Service (London) Co Ltd 1970 to 1971

Peter’s family have instructed the asbestos team at law firm Leigh Day to investigate a legal claim, and they are now appealing for information from anyone who worked with Peter during his time as a carpet fitter to assist with the case.

Rita Craig, Peter’s ex-wife, said:

“Peter’s death came as a huge shock as he died very suddenly. If anyone who worked with Peter could share any information they can remember with our legal team, it would mean a lot to us."

Leigh Day solicitor Andrew Cooper said:

“Asbestos was used in many forms during the 1960s and 1970s and has been found in flooring, tiles and carpets which were installed during that period. We are appealing for anyone who worked alongside Peter Chapman to get in touch.”
