The family of a former carpenter in the London and Kent area are appealing for help from his former colleagues after his death from mesothelioma, an asbestos related cancer.

Michael Russell worked for a number of firms in the Surbition area throughout the 1960s and 1970s as he trained to become a carpenter.
In 1972 when he was 28 years old, Michael and his wife Lynn moved to Maidstone where he worked for two firms as a carpenter. He also worked for Wates Limited, a building contractor firm, between 1972 and 1974.
Michael recalled working with asbestos boards for the firms in Maidstone and, in particular, he recalled sawing asbestos boards on a regular basis.
Michael died in Tenterden, Kent, at the age of 78 in September 2022, with his death from mesothelioma being confirmed after the coroner opened an inquest.
Michael’s family have since instructed the asbestos team at law firm Leigh Day to investigate a legal claim, and they are now appealing for information to assist with the case.
Leigh Day is interested to hear from anyone who worked with Michael during his time as a carpenter, particularly at Wates Limited.
Lynn Russell said:
“Michael’s death as a result of mesothelioma came as a huge shock to us. As a family we are still looking for answers about the cause of his disease. It would be very helpful to our family if anyone who worked with Michael could share any information they may have with our legal team.”
Leigh Day solicitor, Andrew Cooper, said:
“We know that many carpenters in the 1960s and 1970s were exposed to asbestos dust when cutting asbestos sheets, which were used as fireproofing materials at the time. We are appealing for anyone who worked alongside Michael Russell to get in touch.”
