Former Coventry maths teacher appeals for information following mesothelioma diagnosis

Margaret, aged 83, was diagnosed in 2021 with mesothelioma, a type of cancer caused by asbestos exposure. She believes that she was exposed to asbestos during her time teaching at the Coventry school from 1986 to 1996. 

Margaret taught maths in the dining room adjacent to the kitchen in Block 3 due to a lack of classroom space. She recalls that the staff were told at the beginning of term that asbestos removal work was to be carried out in the kitchen. She recalls being present in the dining room as this work was being done.
 
Having now received the devastating diagnosis of mesothelioma she believes that her illness has been caused as a result of the asbestos removal work that was carried out. She is concerned that hers may not have been the only exposure and that other staff members and pupils may be affected in the future.

The Leigh Day asbestos team are working with Margaret to trace people who were at the school at the relevant time including other teachers, caretakers, kitchen staff and pupils. They would also like to speak to any workmen who may have been carrying out the asbestos removal work at the school. These may be contractors or employed by Coventry City Council, as the school was under its control at the time. 
 
Mrs Adams lived in the Coventry area for many years. She currently lives in Stranraer and has recently published a book enabling beekeepers to identify the plant sources of their honey.

“My family and I are anxious that all my pupils are made aware of what has happened to me.”
 
Solicitor in the asbestos team Louisa Saville said:
 
“We are hoping to identify Margaret’s former colleagues or anyone who may have worked at President Kennedy School at a similar time who may be able to assist in our investigations into her asbestos exposure.”
