Ticketmaster reveal hack caused data breach affecting 40,000 customers

Ticketmaster could face claims for compensation by customers following data breach of personal and financial information

Posted on 27 June 2018

More than 40,000 UK customers of the website Ticketmaster may have been affected by a breach of their personal information.

A leading data protection lawyer has said that Ticketmaster could now face a significant number of claims for compensation after a statement from Ticketmaster revealed that the names, addresses, email addresses, telephone numbers, payment details and the log-in details of customers may have been compromised.

The ticketing company reported that malicious software on third-party customer support product caused the hack.

Ticketmaster have stated that UK customers who purchased, or attempted to purchase, tickets between February and 23rd June 2018 may be affected as well as international customers who purchased, or attempted to purchase, tickets between September 2017 and 23rd June 2018.

The company said that it had contacted affected customers as well as setting up a website to answer any questions. It has recommended those affected reset their passwords and offered them a free 12-month identity monitoring service.

It has also advised customers who remain concerned or notice any suspicious activity on their account to contact their banks or credit card companies.

However Sean Humber from law firm Leigh Day who acts for victims of cybercrime said:

“This is just the latest in a recent spate of worrying data breaches from companies handling very sensitive data online on behalf of their customers.

“What is striking about this breach is the admission by Ticketmaster that ‘payment details’ have been accessed. The company must now be clear exactly what has been accessed, as any data breach involving an individual’s financial information is especially serious.

“If it transpires that the data was hacked as a result of inadequate security systems employed by Ticketmaster then those affected are likely to be entitled to compensation for the distress and inconvenience caused, as well as any financial losses they may have suffered.”
