Benefits for asbestos related diseases

If you have been diagnosed with an asbestos related illness, in addition to making a claim for compensation, you may also be entitled to receive state benefits.

You may have suffered from loss of earnings or have incurred expenses in relation to travel, especially if you cannot drive.  You may also require some care, help and assistance because of your illness.  You should not be put off from seeking advice about applying for benefits even if you have never applied before.

Benefits advice can be complex and is a fast changing area and we do not intend to offer specific advice to asbestos sufferers about their potential entitlements in this website.  Individuals should seek specialist advice from a welfare benefits advisor.  In some circumstances, applying for benefits can affect existing entitlements to any means tested benefits you may already be receiving, so it is important to seek expert advice first.

You will be able to get specialist advice from one of the UK asbestos support groups.  You can find details of the groups at the Asbestos Victims Support Groups Forum UK (AVSGF).  You can also contact Mesothelioma UK for assistance.  Their helpline number is 0800 169 2409.

At Leigh Day we employ a welfare benefits advisor, Roy Nightingale to assist our clients with benefits applications and advice.
