Leigh Day & Co has recently settled a case for a former employee at the Birmingham car factory, Lucas Electrical, who developed mesothelioma as a result of asbestos exposure.

Mesothelioma is a devastating cancer caused exclusively by asbestos exposure and in this case arose through asbestos being applied as a ceiling material in the office where our client worked.  He was also required to dismantle electrical components which contained small amounts of asbestos which had been damaged through wear and tear.

The case concerned asbestos exposure in the 1960’s and 70’s and Leigh Day & Co therefore had to undertake extensive investigations to locate witnesses from the car factory who could assist.  Despite the passage of time, we were able to locate 6 people who had previously worked with our client who agreed to assist with the case.

Whilst the asbestos exposure our client endured was relatively low-level, we were able to take the case forwards with the assistance of the witnesses and using expert engineering evidence.  The Supreme Court has recently ruled in favour of claimants in similar circumstances who suffered low-level asbestos exposure causing mesothelioma.
