Leading hip claims lawyers approached about Finsbury total hip replacements
The medical devices team at Leigh Day is investigating a group action on behalf of patients fitted with Finsbury devices

Leigh Day, lead solicitors in the ASR and Pinnacle Ultamet group actions, has been approached by several patients who have been implanted with the Finsbury ADEPT 12/14 Modular Head as part of a total hip replacement prompting them to investigate a group action against DePuy Orthopaedics Inc. and/or MatOrtho Limited.
DePuy Orthopaedics Inc. who acquired Finsbury Orthopaedic Ltd on 11 December 2009 issued an Urgent Field Safety Notice on 15 January 2013 advising surgeons to discontinue use of and cease distribution of the ADEPT 12/14 Modular Heads given its higher than expected failure rates when used in conventional Total Hip Arthoplasty. The notice does not apply to the ADEPT Hip Resurfacing Femoral Components.
Data from the UK National Joint Registry indicates a cumulative revision rate of 12.1% at seven years for the ADEPT 12/14 Modular Head when used in conventional Total Hip Arthoplasty. Further, when this combination is used with the ADEPT Cementless Stem, the data shows a cumulative revision rate of 9.7% at fiveyears. This is based on 17 revisions in a cohort of 195 implantations. In the Australian Orthopaedic Association National Joint Replacement Registry, registry officials reported a 7.1% cumulative revision rate for the ADEPT 12/14 Modular Head at three years when used in total hip replacement, according to an analysis done in September 2012.
The following head/stem combinations are considered to have a higher than expected failure rate:
Approximately 7,500 of these components are thought to have been supplied globally in 21 countries between 2004 and September 2011. From September 2011, ADEPT 12/14 Modular Heads were acquired by MatOrtho Ltd.
Patients implanted with the Finsbury ADEPT 12/14 Modular Head as part of a total hip replacement are suffering from similar symptoms to patients with the DePuy ASR and Pinnacle components. The Finsbury prosthesis is failing as a result of aseptic loosening of the femoral stem, soft tissue reaction and pain.
