Illness Outbreak at Memories Flamenco Beach Resort in Cayo Coco, Cuba

Holidaymakers seek legal advice following health and safety concerns at holiday resort in Cuba

Posted on 15 April 2015

Travel law experts at law firm Leigh Day have been instructed by a number of holidaymakers who have fallen ill at the 4 star Memories Flamenco Beach Resort in Cayo Coco, Cuba.

According to reports from clients, a number of guests at the hotel suffered from sickness and diarrhoea with one man being placed on an IV drip as a result of his illness.

The alleged issues at the hotel have also led to string of bad reviews on the TripAdvisor website with allegations that there was vomit in the hotel’s walkways, staff failing to wash their hands after going to the toilet and chairs stained with food and drinks.

Those holidaymakers who have approached Leigh Day’s travel team have reported undercooked food being served to guests including chicken that was so raw that there was blood in it and other buffet dishes being served lukewarm or cold as a result of the food heaters being broken.

Guests also reported food, such as eggs, not eaten at breakfast being left out to be eaten at lunchtime with no refrigeration or heating.

Holidaymakers have claimed that one of the chefs had an open cut on his hand and was touching raw and cooked food without washing his hands in between.

A number of birds were also landing on the tables to eat leftover food and leaving excrement behind.

A couple celebrating their honeymoon became ill at the hotel, they claim their trip was ruined as a result of their illness.

Clare Campbell, Travel Litigation Partner at Leigh Day said:
“We are beginning to investigate the cause of our clients’ illnesses. We are shocked to hear of allegations involving a number of health and safety breaches that we would not expect at a Thomas Cook approved resort.
“Even more worryingly are claims that the hotel was aware of a problem with the temperature of the food and continued to allow food that was potentially unsafe for consumption to be served”.
