About Leigh Day

We’re not afraid to take on difficult and challenging cases involving medical negligence, serious personal injuries, discrimination in the workplace, defective products and human rights abuses in this country and overseas.

About the team
Our Product Safety & Consumer Law team represent clients with for personal injury claim, claims for losses incurred due to faulty or defective products, particularly medical devices and consumer goods, and claims in connection with financial services products on behalf of retail investors.

The team are currently working on the high-profile cases taking action against Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, Porsche and Audi on behalf of UK drivers over alleged emissions ‘cheat devices’; and also on behalf of investors in the Woodford Equity Income Fund, to claim damages for losses suffered as a result of alleged breaches of the FCA’s rules.

About the role
We have an opportunity for an Assistant Solicitor with 3-5 years PQE to join the team to support our claimants and lawyers with managing our complex consumer law and financial services cases and developing new matters.

The primary focus of the role will be on the group action being brought on behalf of investors in the Woodford Equity Income Fund, as well as helping the team to develop their financial services sector work.

Interest in developing work in other areas related to consumer protection is very much welcomed.

Experience working in large-scale commercial litigation, in particular in financial services disputes or financial services regulation, would be an advantage.

Case Summary
Leigh Day is bringing a group action on behalf of investors in the Woodford Equity Income Fund (WEIF) who have, it is alleged, suffered loss and damage as a result of the fund’s poor management.

The claim is against Link Fund Solutions Limited, the Authorised Corporate Director of the fund (Link).

The central allegation in the group claim is that Link failed to comply with the rules set out in the Financial Conduct Authority handbook.  This gives investors a right to bring a claim against Link for the losses they have suffered as a result of its breaches of the applicable rules.

The claim is being made on behalf of the thousands of investors who were invested in WEIF when the fund was suspended in June 2019.

The claim Leigh Day is bringing, as well as the events surrounding the collapse of the WEIF, has received a significant amount of press coverage.  This is a high profile and exciting case to work on.

The group action is currently in its early stages – pre-action correspondence has concluded, claims are being issued at court and Particulars of Claim are being prepared.

There is therefore scope for any potential applicant to this role to see the case from the early stages through to trial or settlement.
