Our International environment work
We have undertaken legal actions in the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU), the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), regional courts such as the African Regional Courts, and other international judicial bodies.
At Leigh Day, we help people and communities around the world who have been hurt by pollution and environmental damage. We take on big, challenging cases, even when they involve people living in remote areas, to make sure their voices are heard and justice is served.
Our recent work
Shell - Bodo
Leigh Day took the case of the Bodo villagers to the High Court in London, four months before the case was due to go to trial, Shell agreed a landmark settlement for £55 million
Shell - Ogale and Bille
In October and December 2015, the Ogale and Bille Communities in the Niger Delta filed claims in the English Courts against Shell. The cases involve devastating oil pollution caused by Shell’s operations.
Vedanta
Leigh Day represented 2,577 Zambian villagers who took action against UK based Vedanta Resources plc and its Zambian subsidiary Konkola Copper Mines
Big companies, especially those in industries like mining, oil, and gas, can cause serious pollution and harm to the environment. They often work in countries where environmental rules are weak, making it easier for them to save money and avoid following strict laws.
In many places, people don’t have strong laws or support to protect their land, water, and health. This makes it hard for local communities to fight back when their environment is damaged. Finding a lawyer to help them get compensation for harm to their health or livelihoods can be nearly impossible.
