Survivor of childhood sexual abuse by former teacher at St Augustine’s Catholic College settles legal case
A former pupil of St Augustine’s Catholic College in Wiltshire has settled a civil claim against Wiltshire County Council for sexual abuse committed by former teacher Robert Kalton.
Posted on 03 February 2026
Kalton, 88, was convicted in November 2023 at Salisbury Crown Court after admitting six counts of indecent assault against the pupil during his time at the school. Kalton was sentenced to four years in prison in February 2024 and placed on the sex offenders register for life. He has been convicted for a total of 32 sexual offences against at least six boys at various locations across the UK.
The survivor, who we will refer to as Tom, was represented by Leigh Day abuse claims partner Dino Nocivelli, in a civil case against Wiltshire County Council for sexual abuse suffered in the 1970s when he was 12 to 16 years old.
It was alleged that St Augustine’s Catholic College (then operated by Wiltshire County Council) employed Kalton and allowed him access to children and to abuse his position of trust as a teacher.
Tom was frightened by the abuse and felt unable to speak out for many years due to fear of not being believed. He has suffered long-term psychological harm, including periods of mental illness, and the experience has resulted in him cutting ties with the Catholic Church.
Tom felt compelled to come forward to protect others, prevent further abuse and hold Kalton to account.
A civil settlement was reached in September 2025 which included compensation for the suffering endured, future therapy needs, and a written apology from St Augustine’s Catholic College.
Human rights partner Dino Nocivelli said:
“My client has shown immense courage throughout this process and I am glad that we were able to secure this settlement for him. I hope that the compensation will help my client access the therapy needed for him to move forward and that the apology will help him to feel a sense of closure.”
