The woman, who we have called Ellen, suffered repeated sexual abuse from her father as a child and into her adolescence. She was also subjected to verbal abuse and controlling behaviour, with her father threatening her over reporting or disclosing the abuse.
Decades later, Ellen’s father was convicted of sexual offences against his daughter following a criminal trial in which he denied the charges.
As a result of the abuse, Ellen has continually suffered from complex PTSD, anxiety and depression, and developed an eating disorder over a number of years.
The abuse also impacted Ellen’s education and career, affecting her daily life functions and hampering her ability to pursue her career of choice. She has experienced consistent panic attacks, low self-esteem, flashbacks, nightmares, and triggering reminders. Her experiences have also impacted her relationships with other people.
Following the criminal conviction, Ellen brought a civil legal claim to address the impacts the abuse has had on her life.
Following a hearing, Ellen secured a judgment to be awarded damages for the injury and suffering she has endured as a result of the abuse.
Ellen is represented by Leigh Day abuse team partner Dino Nocivelli and solicitor Shaimaa Al-Mukhtar.
Dino Nocivelli said:
“This case is a particularly distressing and sensitive one, in which our client was abused by her father throughout her childhood and into her teenage years. The consequences and impacts on our client’s life since have been severe. Now following a civil case, we are pleased to have helped secure a judgment for damages for the abuse our client suffered and its lasting impacts. Nothing can truly make up for the experiences our client went through, but we hope that these damages will be able to offer some much-needed support going forward.”
