Leigh Day & Co has recovered damages on behalf of the widow of an electrician who died from mesothelioma in 2010.

Tom Phillips worked as an electrician renovating pubs around London and the south east throughout the late 1950’s and 1960’s.  He worked alongside other tradesmen, including laggers who applied asbestos insulation to pipework and machinery.  In 2009 he developed breathing problems and was diagnosed with mesothelioma, an asbestos related lung cancer, which sadly resulted in his death six months later.  Mesothelioma is an aggressive cancer of the lungs which is only caused by asbestos exposure.

Daniel Easton of Leigh Day & Co represented the family in pursuing the company which employed the laggers and took the case to a successful conclusion with a negotiated settlement.

Daniel said “It is always difficult to investigate claims where the relevant facts are 50 years old.  However, we were able to take the claim forward thanks to the assistance of Tom’s old work mates and witnesses who came forward after advertising in the local press”.
