“No excuses” discipline in UK schools
Leigh Day is investigating concerns about the use of “no excuses” discipline such as isolation booths and other excessive school punishments in UK schools.
“No excuses” discipline in UK schools
BBC News recently reported that it had carried out an investigation which revealed that one pupil at Outwood Grange Academy in Wakefield spent more than half an academic year in an isolation booth. Isolation booths are spaces where children are placed in silence and monitored on camera, sometimes for long periods. Parents and pupils have told reporters that children were sent to isolation for minor matters, including:
- Having an untucked shirt
- Talking in class
- Asking to use the toilet
- Arriving late, in some cases by under a minute
- Not wearing a blazer
The Leigh Day abuse team is looking into reports of excessive punishments in schools across the UK, after more than 50 families reached out with allegations of punitive disciplinary practices.
