Daughter of former engineer appeals for witnesses following father’s death from mesothelioma

David Cockman worked as a travelling serviceman for Wellman Incandescent Furnace Co Limited between 1967 to 1973. The company manufactured furnaces and furnace burners.

David’s work involved servicing furnaces which had pipes that were insulated with asbestos lagging. He also worked in the engine rooms onboard submarines while working for Wellmans across multiple branches in the UK.  

Later during his time at Wellmans, David took on a role as a maintenance engineer. This involved maintaining and repairing furnaces and boilers in commercial premises such as crematoriums and factories.

In March 2024, David was diagnosed with mesothelioma. As part of his treatment, he underwent immunotherapy. Following his third dose he suffered paralysis as a side effect and was unable to use his hands or walk.

Just four months after his diagnosis, David died from mesothelioma at 83 years old.

In 2025, David’s family instructed Kevin Johnson from Leigh Day asbestos team to pursue a legal claim.

The Leigh Day asbestos team is investigating David’s potential exposure to asbestos during his time at Wellmans.
