Recall of Flogas cylinders announced across the east of England
The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) has announced a product recall of Flogas Gold Butane Gas Cylinders.
Posted on 04 December 2024
The affected cylinders were sold between 6 November and 22 November 2024 at various locations across East Anglia, East Midlands, the Home Counties and the South East. All sale locations for the cylinders are affected, but the recall particularly references B&Q, B&M, Homebase, gas dealers and other local sellers.
The OPSS advises that any 4.5kg, 7kg and 13kg gold or red butane gas bottles purchased between these dates should not be used and, if already in use, should be disconnected immediately.
Customers should contact Flogas directly if they believe that they have purchased one of the cylinders and store the cylinder outside where possible until collection is arranged.
The reason for the recall is that the butane cylinders have been incorrectly filled with a mixture of butane and propane gas and therefore does not meet the requirements of The Gas Appliances (Enforcement) and Miscellaneous Amendments Regulations 2018.
The mixture of gas in the affected cylinders creates a higher pressure than usual, which could result in a risk of fire, gas leakage or explosion.
Product safety solicitor, Philippa Wheeler, comments on the recall:
“Sadly, we see numerous cases of injuries arising from defective gas cylinders. Gas cylinders are incredibly dangerous when they do not conform to the required safety standards.
“Consumers put considerable trust in gas dealers to ensure that their refill mechanism for the cylinders is safe, as it is incredibly difficult for a consumer to know that the cylinder has been filled correctly. Gas is a dangerous substance and problems with cylinders can result in very serious injuries such as burns.”
