Leigh Day partner Richard Meeran was recently invited to attend a UN Day of General Discussion (DGD) held in Geneva on 21 February.

The DGD was to discuss State obligations under the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights in the context of business activities.

A mix of representatives from States, businesses, trade unions, civil society, NHRs and academics participated in the discussion the objective of which was to define minimal obligations with which States were expected to comply.

Mr Meeran was invited to join in the GDG because of his pioneering human rights cases against multinationals, which have transformed the law on jurisdiction and parent company duty of care. Mr Meeran spoke about the barriers to victims’ access to remedy .  He has spoken at several events at the UN on the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.

The UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights has published written submissions on the draft general comment on State obligations on its website.
