Ikea has renewed warnings that the Ikea Patrull safety gates should not be used and should be returned to their nearest Ikea store where a full refund will be issued.

In a statement the company said:

“Ikea urges customers who have a Patrull safety gate to immediately stop using it and to bring it back to any Ikea store for a full refund.

“Ikea has received customer reports where Patrull safety gates have opened unexpectedly and children have fallen down stairs. Some of the incidents have required medical attention. A third party investigation has shown that the locking mechanism is not reliable, posing a risk for small children, despite approved tests to applicable standards.”

Donna Moore, Country Customer Relations Manager, Ikea UK, said “At Ikea, we take a zero tolerance perspective regarding child safety. We want to offer safe products and we believe that children are the most important people in the world.

"Whenever we are made aware of a possible safety issue with our products, we investigate thoroughly. We cannot accept that there could be a risk of injury while playing and as an immediate and precautionary action we have decided to recall all Patrull safety gates.

“Ikea is not willing to risk children’s safety and therefore urges all customers that have a Patrull safety gate to immediately stop using it and to bring it back to an Ikea store for a full refund.

Patrull safety gate, Patrull Klamma and Patrull Fast have been sold on all Ikea markets. Proof of purchase (receipt) is not required. For more information, please contact Ikea on 0203 645 0010."

Consumer law and product liability lawyers at Leigh Day commend Ikea's swift response however comment that 'a child's safety is paramount to any parent and any injury caused by a product aimed to prevent harm to children must be manufactured and tested to the highest standards. There is no room for error as the potential consequences can be devastating.'
