Case study: Miriam O'Reilly

In January 2011 Leigh Day successfully settled a claim on behalf of Miriam O'Reilly against the BBC on the grounds of ageism and victimisation.  Miriam was a successful journalist who worked on the BBC's programme Countryfile but was dropped from the show when it transferred to a primetime slot on BBC1 on Sunday evenings. Having been dropped from the show Miriam then lost other journalism work she had done for the broadcaster which the employment tribunal found was 'an act of victimisation' because of the allegations she was making about ageism. After the tribunal Miriam said the the TV industry had a long way to go in eliminating agesim in the recruitment of older women.
