Statement regarding University of Chichester African Studies course

Leigh Day has issued a statement on behalf of the 13 students represented by head of immigration and asylum and human rights team partner, Jacqueline McKenzie.

“The University of Chichester made the decision in May 2023 to suspend recruitment to The History of Africa and the African Diaspora MRes programme as part of a portfolio review. Thirteen students who were enrolled on the History of the Africa and the Diaspora MRes and similar PhD studies represented by Jacqueline McKenzie, partner at Leigh Day solicitors initiated legal claims in relation to the University’s decision. Both parties confirm that they have reached agreed settlement terms in relation to the dispute which is subject to a confidential settlement agreement.”

In February 2025 the Office of the Independent Adjudicator (OIA) for Higher Education found a complaint made by students against the university was partly justified, and that the university’s claim that it did not guarantee that a specific member of staff would teach students, was unreasonable.
