Trust report finds serious failings at Addenbrooke’s hospital linked to suspended surgeon Kuldeep Stohr

A report commissioned by Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has revealed serious concerns and “a series of missed opportunities” about the treatment of hundreds of patients at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, following a review into the conduct of Kuldeep Stohr, a suspended paediatric orthopaedic surgeon.

Posted on 31 October 2025

The Trust launched a comprehensive investigation into the care of more than 800 patients, many of them children, after identifying a series of surgical and treatment failings in cases involving Ms Stohr.

Ms Stohr, who was suspended in early 2025, is alleged to have performed procedures that resulted in long-term complications, including pain, mobility issues, and the need for corrective surgery.

The report found that some procedures carried out by Ms Stohr involved technical errors, such as misplaced screws and poor alignment in bone surgeries. According to the report, these errors have led to significant distress and long-term health consequences for a number of affected patients.

Concerns about Ms Stohr’s practice were reportedly raised as far back as 2015, but it was not until earlier this year that a full-scale review was initiated. The report found that there was a “pivotal missed opportunity” to act following a series of recommendations were made to the Trust about Stohr in 2016.

The Trust has apologised to affected families and is offering follow-up appointments and support. The Trust says it now has an action plan that sets out the changes they will make “to ensure an incident like this cannot happen again.”  However, campaigners and legal experts are calling for greater transparency and accountability, particularly for those whose lives have been significantly impacted.

Medical negligence partner at Leigh Day, Julia Reynolds, represents a client affected by alleged failings at Addenbrookes involving Ms Stohr. She said:

“This report lays bare a series of missed opportunities that could have prevented harm to patients. It is deeply concerning that serious questions about surgical safety were raised as far back as 2015, yet the Trust failed to act decisively.

“The findings show not only technical failings but also systemic issues in clinical governance and oversight. Families affected by these failings deserve answers, accountability, and support. We urge the Trust to ensure that lessons are learned and that robust safeguards are put in place to prevent anything like this from happening again.”

Lucy Timms’ son was injured in a road traffic collision and had surgery at Addenbrooke’s on his fractured leg that resulted in significant pain and distress for a significant period of time after a surgical implant was incorrectly put in. Stohr reviewed the surgery performed by one of her colleagues and missed the serious issues causing a prolonged period of pain and suffering, it is claimed. This included revision surgery where the bone had to be rebroken. Ms Timms said:

“We trusted the hospital to get it right, but the pain my son went through was unbearable. What’s worse is knowing that the problems could have been spotted and acted on earlier. I don’t want any other family to go through what we did — the uncertainty, the distress, and the feeling that no one was listening.

“This report must be a turning point. The Trust needs to take accountability and show that it is serious about protecting patients and rebuilding trust.”
