John came to us after the devastating loss of his wife, Andrea, following complications during heart surgery. Despite the challenges, John and his family were determined to uncover the truth about what went wrong.
In October 2020, Andrea began feeling breathless, and her GP quickly identified an issue with her heart. She was referred to the hospital, where doctors discovered a faulty valve, leading to surgery on November 13th. However, complications during the operation caused the effect of a heart attack or a cardiac arrest. A delay in addressing the issue left Andrea severely compromised, and she passed away a week later. At the time, her family was not informed of what had gone wrong during the procedure.
John and his family sought help from our Manchester-based medical negligence team at Leigh Day to investigate the circumstances surrounding Andrea’s death. The hospital Trust eventually admitted their mistakes, acknowledging that if they hadn’t delayed, Andrea would likely have survived. While John and his family received a financial settlement, it was the formal apology from the Trust that mattered most to them.
