Lawyers from Leigh Day, the UK’s leading law firm for claims against manufacturers of metal-on-metal (MOM) hip implants, are hosting a number of events across the country to give free legal advice to people who believe they are victims of failed ASR hip replacements.

The lawyers from the firm’s product liability team will visit London, Middlesborough, Cardiff and Birmingham over the next two weeks. Details of the date and venue of each event can be found here.

The events are also a chance to update existing clients who are suffering from poor health following the early failure of their hip replacement implants.

Metal on metal hip implants first hit the headlines in April 2010 after metal hip components called ASR and ASR XL, manufactured by DePuy International, were recalled.

In February 2012 the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) warned patients who have received larger head MOM hip replacements that they would need annual check-ups for the lifetime of their MOM total hip replacements.

Further concerns were raised by a report from the University of Bristol in the Lancet published in March 2012, which reported an analysis of data from 402,051 hip replacements recorded in the National Joint Registry of England and Wales. The report concluded that MOM implants failed more often compared with other options and should not be implanted.

Michelle Victor, product liability lawyer at Leigh Day, said: “Patients who have had an ASR component fitted which has failed early are entitled to seek compensation for the pain, suffering and financial losses occasioned by the early failure of the hip replacements.

“These events are a chance for anyone who feels they have been a victim of a failed ASR hip replacement to get some free legal advice about how that can take a claim forward and ask our lawyers any questions they may have about the process.”
