A 75 year old man has received compensation after being diagnosed with mesothelioma, an asbestos-related cancer.

The man, known only as Mr D, was represented by the industrial diseases team at law firm Leigh Day who settled the claim just over six months after first meeting with Mr D to discuss his claim.

Mr D was exposed to asbestos when he worked as a refuse worker in a number of jobs from the mid-1960s to the early 1980s.  The risks of exposing workers to asbestos were well-known by this time.

Mr D had worked for 777 Demolition & Haulage Co. Ltd where he came into contact with asbestos as he worked as a lorry driver, collecting industrial waste.

Mr D was also involved in demolition work, including the demolition of several buildings that contained asbestos pipe-lagging and outbuildings made of asbestos sheeting.

After extensive investigation Ewan Tant, a specialist mesothelioma lawyer at Leigh Day, was able to track down the insurers of this company and launched a claim against them.

The case was a complex one, particularly the elements relating to care, as Mr D has a disabled wife.  The case concluded successfully.

Mr D said:

“My wife and two daughters are pleased that the case is now at an end, and we are pleased with the outcome of the claim.

“I would like to thank Ewan Tant for dealing with my compensation claim, and the quick way with which he dealt with it.

Ewan Tant from the industrial diseases team at Leigh Day, said:

“I am very pleased that we have been able to settle this claim for our client so quickly as we know that the settlement has brought a great sense of relief to him and his family.”
