Product liability lawyers instructed in gastric band claim

The medical device team is investigating the alleged failure of a gastric band.

26 April 2019

Product liability solicitor Tina Patel has been instructed to investigate the alleged failure of a gastric band.

Gastic bands are inflatable silicone devices that are placed around the top of the stomach to treat obesity by limiting the amount of food that can be consumed at one time.

The Statistics on Obesity, Physical Activity and Diet - England, 2017 report produced by the NHS noted that obesity prevalence increased from 15% in 1993 to 27% in 2015 and the increase in obesity rates has seen a rise in the use of Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding surgery as a mechanism of weight control.

Gastric band surgery is not without risks. An article in the Journal of the American College of Surgeons in 2013 reported on a number of complications following the implantation of the devices.

Complications can include: Band slippage or prolapse; Port or tubing malfunctions; Pouch dilation; Band erosion; and Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

Some patients have to have the device removed if they suffer from these complications.

Leigh Day is now investigating alleged problems with gastric bands. Gastric band failure can cause severe abdominal pain and lead to the need for additional revision surgery.

How Can We Help?

If you have suffered as a result of a failed gastric band system you may have a legal claim.
