AGC Chemicals and PFAS: Meeting on Potential Legal Action

Law firm Leigh Day has been invited to speak to the Thornton-Cleveleys community about potential legal action against AGC Chemicals.

Thursday 16 October 2025
17:30 - 19:30
Thornton-Cleveleys

Background to the community meeting

A multi-agency investigation into potential contamination from the AGC Chemicals site was launched by Wyre Council last year under Part 2A of the Environmental Protection Act 1990. The purpose of this investigation is to understand whether PFOA has been released to air and deposited onto the ground in the local area.

Leigh Day is concerned by the findings of this investigation. The results so far appear to show significant and sporadic contamination of the local area by PFOA, a substance classified as carcinogenic to humans by the World Health Organization. We understand that further sampling, to the southeast and also to the southwest of the AGC Chemicals site, is scheduled to begin in Autumn 2025 with results to be published early next year. Recent reports have also indicated that PFOA release may be continuing.

Details of the community meeting

We would like to thank members of the community for inviting us to speak at a community meeting on Thursday 16 October 2025.

The purpose of this meeting will be to:

  • Introduce ourselves and the type of work that we do at Leigh Day, particularly in regard to PFAS;
  • Discuss the potential for any legal action and how Leigh Day may be able to assist; and
  • Answer any questions that community members may have.

We would like this to be an informal meeting where all participants feel able to contribute and ask questions.

Leigh Day continues to investigate issues surrounding the alleged contamination of allotment plots situated near AGC Chemicals plant in Thornton-Cleveleys, Lancashire.

Wyre Council announced in July 2024 that it had, in conjunction with the Environment Agency, launched an investigation after discovering the probable release of the chemical perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) by AGC Chemicals Europe Ltd, and previously Imperial Chemistry Industries Ltd (ICI), at a site in the area.
