Debbie's story

Debbie first became aware of problems with her hips in 2006, after she'd had some pain for a few years. She saw a consultant and he recommended that, in 2007, she have both her hips replaced. His recommendation was to use large, metal-on-metal hips. She then suffered a series of serious health problems, including metal debris in her bloodstream, the development of a tumour, soft tissue and bone destruction, and revision surgery. It is likely that she will have to use a wheelchair by the time she is 60, and she still has high levels of cobalt and chromium in her bloodstream.
