Jose Leonardo Gonzalez's Profile Picture
Leonardo is a solicitor in the international and group claims team. He specialises in representing vulnerable communities in Latin America and other regions which have been affected by environmental contamination, personal injuries and illegal detentions, attributed to the actions of multinational corporations.

Leonardo has practiced law in England and Colombia. He qualified as a lawyer in Colombia in 2004, where he worked on a variety of litigation cases including contractual and ex-contractual liability claims. He then moved to the UK, where he gained a Master’s degree in International Commercial Law and cross-qualified as a solicitor.

Since joining Leigh Day in 2009, he has worked on group actions aimed at obtaining compensation for impoverished overseas communities affected by the actions of UK-based corporations. An example of these actions is a claim on behalf of a community of farmers in Colombia who allege that their land was severely impacted by the construction of a pipeline.

At present Leonardo works in a team that represents members of a Peruvian community who were killed, injured and detained whilst protesting against alleged environmental contamination and other problems.  The community is bringing a case in the High Court of England and Wales alleging that a mining company which operates in their home town, is responsible for the harm they suffered.

Leonardo has a special interest in corporate accountability and human rights in Latin America. He has worked with communities displaced by violence in Colombia, to empower them with knowledge of their legal rights. He participates in investigations to determine whether the actions of multinational corporations in Latin America, respect the rights of local communities.

Leonardo speaks Spanish.
