Leigh Day human rights partner and head of the firm’s international department, Richard Meeran, has been invited to be a panellist at a United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) consultation taking place in Geneva on 5 and 6 October.
The consultation is on the relevance of human rights due diligence to determinations of corporate liability.
Richard is a panellist for a session entitled ‘Human Rights Due Diligence and Claims of Negligence’ which will explore the relationship between human rights due diligence and claims of negligence. The session will have a particular focus on the extent to which courts have thus far explicitly referred to, or drawn from, UN Guiding Principles on business and human rights due diligence in their analysis of whether the relevant standard of care was met by the defendant company in question.
Panellists and participants will be invited to reflect on what could be done to promote greater awareness of human rights due diligence concepts by courts and judges and how to better “embed” human rights due diligence concepts into domestic negligence regimes.
Ensuring access to effective remedy for those affected by business-related human rights abuses is one of the three pillars of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.
Richard was invited to participate in the consultation due to his pioneering work in facilitating access to justice for communities affected by the actions of multinational corporations.  His human rights cases have transformed the law on jurisdiction and the duty of care owed by parent companies.
