Before you contact us
Thank you for considering Leigh Day.
We understand that reaching out to a solicitor can feel daunting, particularly when something important or distressing has happened. We take every enquiry seriously and will treat the information you provide with care and confidentiality.
Before submitting an enquiry, we recommend reading the information below so you know what to expect from us, what information we need, and how we assess new enquiries.
What you can expect from us
When you contact us, we will:
- Treat the information you provide with care and confidentiality, in line with our Privacy Policy
- Review the information you submit as part of an initial assessment
- Contact you if we need further information
- Explain what happens next and, where possible, provide an indication of likely timescales
- Communicate clearly and honestly throughout the process
- Aim to keep you informed, even if there is no significant update to provide
We cannot accept every enquiry
It is important to understand that submitting an enquiry does not mean that we will be able to take on your case.
We receive thousands of enquiries every year and are only able to accept a very small proportion of them.
Every enquiry is assessed individually. When deciding whether we may be able to assist, we consider a range of factors, including:
- The facts of the matter
- The available evidence
- The applicable law
- Funding considerations
- Strategic factors
- Our available resources and capacity
Even where someone has suffered harm, we may not be able to take on their matter.
If we decide not to accept an enquiry, this should not be taken as a view that you do not have a valid claim. Our decision may be influenced by factors other than the merits of the issue itself.
We are generally unable to provide detailed legal advice or a full assessment of the merits of a case where we decide not to take the matter forward.
Please do not send documents unless we ask for them
At the initial stage, we do not usually need supporting documents.
When submitting an enquiry, we normally only need:
- A summary of what happened
- Who was involved
- When it happened
- Any action already taken
- The outcome you are seeking
Please do not send large volumes of documents, photographs, medical records, court papers or other files unless we specifically ask for them.
If we need additional information, we will contact you.
Using AI to write your enquiry
If you use AI tools to help write your enquiry, please review the content carefully before submitting it.
It is often most helpful for us to understand what happened in your own words.
AI tools can sometimes:
- Miss important information
- Make assumptions that are not correct
- Make a claim appear stronger or more certain than it is
- Create unrealistic expectations about whether a claim can be pursued or what how much compensation you could claim
A positive response from an AI tool does not mean that we will be able to take on a claim.
When assessing enquiries, we consider many factors, including the facts, evidence, applicable law, funding, risks and practical considerations.
Decisions about whether to take on a matter are made by people at Leigh Day after reviewing the information provided.
If we are unable to help
If we decide that we are unable to assist, you may wish to seek advice from another solicitor.
The Law Society's 'Find a Solicitor' service allows you to search for solicitors in England and Wales by area of law and location.
Depending on the nature of your enquiry, there may also be specialist organisations that can provide information or support.
