James Shiel-Dick

James is an Australian-qualified lawyer with more than three years’ post-qualification experience. James currently works in Paul Dowling and Sophie Turner’s team in the International and Group Litigation Department specialising in large-scale claimant group actions, particularly those arising from environmental damage.

Legal expertise

James is currently working on a claim on behalf of a group of villagers from Madagascar against the mining giant Rio Tinto. The claim alleges that pollution from a mine has caused local residents to be exposed to dangerous levels of contaminants. 

Further experience

Before joining Leigh Day, James worked as a solicitor at a leading Australian law firm, where he specialised in class actions and commercial litigation. He also has experience in complex insurance disputes, insolvency proceedings, and advising litigation funders in both the UK and Australia.

Education

He holds a Master of Laws from the London School of Economics and Political Science, specialising in public international law. He is also proficient in French as well as English.
