Richard SteinPartner and head of the human rights department

Richard Stein’s practice covers judicial review and human rights.  He specialises in cases dealing with health issues, including medical ethics and hospital closures, education, planning/environment and community care as well as those of a more general political/human rights nature.

He acts principally for campaigning/community groups and individuals challenging decisions of local authorities, quangos and government departments.

Richard acted in the high-profile cases of Diane Blood; Re S, (forced caesarean); exp Belgium, (Pinochet); Ms B, right to die; exp Watts, (NHS treatment abroad); exp FPANI, (Northern Ireland abortion rights); Charlotte Wyatt; Corner House 1 (Protective costs orders); Corner House v Director SFO (Saudi & BAe corruption investigation); Smith v NE Derbyshire PCT (patient involvement in health changes).

He joined Leigh Day in 1993.  Richard is a frequent legal commentator in the media. He appeared in Channel 4 docu-drama – ‘Born with two mothers’.

He is a member of the Administrative Law Bar Association and the Public Law Project Management Committee.
