Former youth football coach faces sexual abuse charges

Michael Coleman, 74, charged with three counts of indecent assault

Football player

14 August 2017

Michael Coleman, 74, has been bailed to appear at Bolton Magistrates' Court on 12 September to face three counts of indecent assault against a child aged under 14.

The alleged abuse is said to have taken place in the Bolton area between 1982 and 1984.

The charges follow an investigation launched by Greater Manchester Police into non-recent abuse in youth football in December 2016. A national inquiry, Operation Hydrant, was set up in June 2014 to co-ordinate non-recent child abuse investigations around the country, and the Football Association initiated an inquiry into non-recent child abuse in football in December 2016.

Investigators in the FA inquiry are searching thousands of boxes of FA archives. The investigations were established following a number of allegations of abuse by former players. More than 250 potential suspects and 560 victims have been identified by police, with over 300 football clubs involved.

The National Association for People Abused in Childhood runs a support line for people abused in childhood.
