Batches of NovoPen insulin pens recalled due to risk of fault

Certain batches of NovoPen Echo and NovoPen 5 devices, which are used to deliver insulin, have been recalled by the manufacturer Novo Nordisk.

31 August 2017

According to the recall notice on the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) website the recall has been implemented because it has been discovered that insulin cartridge holders in certain batches of the pens may crack or break following exposure to certain chemicals such as household cleaning products.
If a crack or break occurs in the cartridge holder this could lead to under-delivery of insulin which can have serious consequences for the health of the user.
More details on affected batch numbers can be found here.
Anyone who has a device from the affected batch numbers are instructed to contact Novo Nordisk to arrange a replacement.
The MHRA said that it is important that patients do not stop treatment without contacting their diabetes management team.
Nordisk customer services can be contacted on 08456 005055.
