Leading employment lawyers host equal pay event for Ellesmere Port supermarket workers

Law firm Leigh Day, which represents supermarket workers in the UK’s largest equal pay claims against the five biggest supermarkets, will be at the Ellesmere Port Civic Hall on Monday 10 June 2019 to speak to supermarket workers about the firm’s case for equal pay against Morrisons.

The drop-in event will allow for past and present store workers at the twelve Morrisons stores in Ellesmere Port and Liverpool to ask questions and get information about the claim from a Leigh Day solicitor.

The Morrisons workers argue that the work carried out in stores, which is predominantly carried out by women, is of equal value to that carried out in Morrisons distribution centres which is predominantly carried out by men, and will argue that as both groups of workers are performing work of equal value Morrisons should pay them the same rate of pay.

Anyone who works in an hourly paid store role, or has done so within the last 6 months, can potentially make a claim. Men as well as women can claim.

Leigh Day represents over 30,000 store workers from the big five supermarkets – Asda, Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Morrisons and the Co-Op - in similar equal pay cases.

Emma Satyamurti, partner in Leigh Day’s employment team, said:

“We believe that Morrisons is underpaying workers in their stores. Our clients are fighting to receive equal pay with those who are working in the distribution centres as they believe they are doing work of equal value.

“Leigh Day continue their commitment to getting equal pay for our clients as the law states that women and men doing work of equal value should be paid the same.

“The event in Ellesmere Port will be an opportunity for store employees from Morrisons past and present to ask questions and receive information on how they can join the claim against Morrisons to fight for equal and fair pay.”

Leigh Day has created its own dedicated website for its equal pay claims to bring together all the information about the legal challenges in one place. EqualPayNow.co.uk includes information on how to sign up to the claims, explains the law around equal pay and answers frequently asked questions.

The event will be held at the Ellesmere Port Civic Hall (Vauxhall Suite), Civic Way, Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, CH65 0AZ between 9:30am – 6pm on Monday 10 June 2019.
