Consumer lawyer welcomes statement from Vauxhall on Zafira fires

Vauxhall has issued a statement on action the car manufacturer is taking

Burnt out Zafira

9 November 2015

Consumer safety lawyer Jill Paterson has welcomed a statement from the chairman of Vauxhall about action the company is taking following reports that some Zafira cars had burst into flames.

Speaking in a video posted on Youtube on 5th November 2015 Rory Harvey, confirmed that the manufacturer will be writing directly to some 22,000 owners of the affected Zafira B model.

Owners will be invited to arrange for their vehicles’ heating and ventilation systems to be inspected at no cost.

The affected model is the Zafira B without air condition, or with manual air conditioning which was manufactured between 2005 and 2014. First generation and current Zafira Tourer models, or the Mk2 Zafira with automatic climate control are not affected.

Mr Harvey said in the statement that the car fires could relate to the improper repair of the blower resister motor and its thermal fuse.

Owners of affected models can find out more on Vauxhall’s website.

Jill Paterson, consumer safety lawyer at Leigh Day, welcomes news that car owners will be contacted by Vauxhall. She said:

“Manufacturers of potentially dangerous products have sometimes been slow to announce recalls or contact consumers.

“I am pleased that Vauxhall will be taking steps to contact thousands of Zafira car owners who may be driving vehicles that could catch fire.

“I hope that Vauxhall will soon be able to identify the cause of the reported car fires and advise consumers accordingly.”
