Colombia - gas pipeline

In 1997, a subsidiary of BP plc, which is based in the UK, managed the construction of a pipeline in Colombia to transport crude oil to an export terminal on the Caribbean coast.

The OCENSA pipeline crossed agricultural lands and farmers claimed that it had caused extensive environmental damage. They alleged that, as a result, their farms were less productive. From 2004 Leigh Day represented a group of 54 Colombian farmers against the former BP subsidiary.

The farmers’ complaint was settled following a mediation process that took place in Bogota in June 2006. The settlement provided for the establishment of an Environmental and Social Improvement Trust Fund by BP for the benefit of the affected farmers
