Possible link between birth defects and drugs used on girls in care

09 April 2009

The BBC has reported that a significant number of women who were formerly residents of a Church of England home, Kendall House in Gravesend, Kent have given birth to children with birth defects.  It is said that the women were given large doses of tranquilisers and other drugs during the 1970s and 1980s as teenagers.  Many other women in the country may also have been subjected to a similar regime of being sedated on a regular basis.

The human rights department at Leigh Day & Co, which is led by partner Frances Swaine, has acted for many people who have been abused whilst in residential care and has obtained substantial compensation on their behalves. Leigh Day & Co urges the Government to hold a public inquiry into the possible abuses carried out at this and other residential homes who had in their care some of the most vulnerable young people in our communities.
