Settlement for adult abused when younger

25 June 2009

Leigh Day human rights partner Alison Millar has won compensation for a client with learning disabilities after being instructed by the Official Solicitor.  After suffering from sexual abuse as a child our client, X, was accommodated in residential care.  X continues to suffer from anxiety and behavioural issues and also has to manage some challenging medical problems.

Our client’s claim centred around treatment he suffered whilst a resident at two care homes in SW England run by the same management where he encountered abuse and neglect.  During his time there X was unsupported by the care home personnel, usually over the management of his medical condition.  This included X being excluded from X’s birthday celebration, being made to eat by himself, and being made to wear special clothing that made him stand out as someone with a problem.  A punishment regime was also used with our client that prevented X from watching television; X was also stopped from speaking to family members.  This treatment left our client feeling suicidal at times.

The Court has now approved a payment of compensation to X for the neglect, abuse and poor care X received as a young person in care.  X was represented by Alison Millar who can be contacted on 0207 650 1241.
