Leigh Day & Co welcomes Binyam Mohamed back home
24 February 2009
Leigh Day & Co is delighted that Binyam Mohamed has finally returned to the UK after nearly seven years of a living nightmare. During this time he was unlawfully imprisoned, held incommunicado, subjected to extraordinary rendition and barbaric torture before finally being held for nearly four years at Guantanamo Bay.
Following concerted campaigning and legal proceedings on both sides of the Atlantic, the US authorities finally agreed to release Mr Mohamed last week. He arrived yesterday afternoon at RAF Northolt.
A statement from Mr Mohamed can be read here
Leigh Day & Co continues to represent Mr Mohamed in a range of respects. This includes the continuing judicial review aimed at uncovering and making public the full story of his ill-treatment at the hands of the US authorities and others and the complicity of the British State in it. Material disclosed in these proceedings has been referred to the Attorney General and Director of Public Prosecutions to investigate whether British Security Services were implicated in his torture. We will ensure that appropriate steps continue to be taken to ensure any criminal sanctions are properly pursued.
Richard Stein, partner at Leigh Day & Co said ‘the British courts have played a proud part in ensuring Binyam Mohamed’s return home. There are still a number of outstanding important and difficult issues to be resolved. We will work on Mr Mohamed’s behalf to ensure that if necessary the courts are called upon to guarantee that torture is rooted out and exposed as a practice which is unlawful and unacceptable in a civilised society’.
