Leigh Day at international human rights conference
30 October 2008
Leigh Day & Co was amongst lawyers and activists from 17 different jurisdictions invited to participate in an international workshop and conference hosted by the European Centre for Constitutional and Human Rights (ECCHR) in Berlin on October 9 - 10, 2008.
The theme of the conference - "Transnational Corporations and Human Rights" required all participants to contribute to a discussion on the possibilities and problems faced by lawyers and activists in holding multinationals to account. The pre-conference workshop involved delegates from South America, the USA, India, Europe and the Phillipines, and provided an opportunity for practitioners to exchange experiences in bringing human rights claims against corporate giants as Shell, British Petroleum and Coca Cola.
Sarah Moore, in attendance for Leigh Day & Co, explained that the UK courts, are currently uniquely placed within Europe to accommodate large multi-party actions against big corporations, for reasons of funding and efficient court management. Leigh Day & Co was the only firm of solicitors invited as a delegate from the UK. The firm continues to build on its reputation in this area through the work of the firm's international claims department.
