Toyota recalls 180,000 unsafe cars in the UK
05 February 2010
The Japanese car manufacture Toyota has confirmed that it will recall British cars, that might have been fitted with faulty accelerator parts. The defect causes the accelerator pedal to become stuck in a depressed position causing the car to accelerate when the driver is trying to decelerate making it difficult to brake, posing an obvious safety hazard.
This recall follows on from an earlier recall where accelerator pedals in Toyota cars became stuck under the car floor mats. Over 8 million cars have been recalled worldwide. Models affected include the iQ, Yaris, Auris , Corolla , Verso and Avensis. Should you experience any problems with your car you should contact your local Toyota dealer without delay.
In the US it is claimed that there have been hundreds of injuries and 19 deaths relating to the defective accelerator. Toyota have stated that they are not aware of any accidents that are attributable to the defect in the UK, however many accidents may have not been reported because drivers may have thought the accident was their own fault, or third party claims have been settled by the insurer.
At least 29 class actions has been filed in the US courts alleging that Toyota fraudulently concealed safety hazards and breached its own warranties and contracts.
